Just because I took the time to figure it out:
85 books altogether
51 were fiction
17 were nonfiction
10 were memoirs
7 were graphic novels
Of those, 66 (78%) were written by white authors and 19 (22%) were by authors of color. (I didn't calculate male vs. female authors, old vs. new, library books vs. review copies vs. storebought books, because I figured if I wasn't dying to know those stats, probably nobody else was either.)
I also read parts of at least 3 books of short stories, 2 poetry books, and at least a dozen cookbooks.
Reading goals for 2010? Bring the authors of color up to at least 25%, increase my reading of local authors, and eventually finish A Fine Balance and David Copperfield.

ReplyDeleteYippee for reading goals and accomplishments and tracking stats you care about! I love these posts and love looking at my year-in-review at the same time as I pull my hair out when my counts don't add up. I mean, really. No one is checking my math right?!?

I started reading 50% POC authors a few months ago, and while it was difficult at the beginning to find lots of books I was excited about, now I just love it! I'll be posting about it soon, along with my new fave authors, so I hope that helps you out. :)

ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a good year of reading, Ali...a few more books than I managed. I hadn't thought to calculate white vs. authors of color (maybe this year)...but I do look at women vs. men and I think women authors outnumbered men on my list this year. Maybe I can actually get my act together and do my stats for the year before the end of the month *laughs*
