Best Books of 2008 and Catch Up Report

It feels a little early to be thinking about best-of-the-year stuff, but Dewey of The Hidden Side of a Leaf has big plans in mind which require an early start. So, at her request, here's my list of the ten best 2008 books I've read so far:

Memoir:
Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction, David Sheff
Just Do It, Douglas Brown
Tweak: Growing up on Methamphetamine, Nic Sheff

Adult Fiction:
Guernica, Dave Boling
When We Were Romans, Matthew Kneale

Young Adult Fiction:
Sweethearts, Sara Zarr
Ten Cents a Dance, Christine Fletcher

Graphic Novel:
The Shiniest Jewel, Marian Henley

What about you? Feel free to link to your post or add your own best of 2008 books to the comments.

So, how'd I do on last week's Weekly Geek catch-up?

1) I found Acedia and Me and perused other reviews to get myself thinking about what I want to say. Baby steps on that one.

2) I finished and reviewed The Swap, read 3 YA books from my pile and am working on the quick read (Attack of the Theater People, by Marc Acito. Lesson learned today: don't read this book on the bus. You'll be tempted, and yet so unwilling, to explain aloud why you keep snickering.)

3) I watched one of the Darfur DVDs and hope to watch the second one tomorrow night.

Since I haven't touched my 4th task, I'd rate myself about 2 1/2 stars out of 5.

  1. I enjoyed Sweethearts! Sara Zarr is really nice, I've been fortunate to meet her a couple of times. Great person!

  2. I think Nineteen Minutes is not a 2008 published book!

    Or is it?

    Do check my short list

  6. Ah, you're right, gautami, it was 2007. I'll take it off. And I apologize, somehow I missed your comment when it came through! I'll go check your list right now.
