David Copperfield

I've picked a Dickens book to read: it will be David Copperfield. Having read 3 pages of the introduction (by somebody else) at the front of my edition, I'm intrigued by the fact that it's somewhat autobiographical. I'm going to read it slowly, with other more contemporary (and diverse!) books in between, which may or may not be a good idea. I'll probably post about it as I go, rather than doing a review at the end. Anyone want to read along with me and discuss?

  1. I would love to say I will read along and discuss, but I realize my wishing and doing are two different things. I do promise to read your posts as you go and I hope you enjoy it. :)

  2. This sounds like a good choice. I have Bleak House on my shelf, waiting to be read.

  3. Sounds like fun, but a friend and I are reading the new Wally Lamb together in January. At 700 plus pages, I'm afraid to make any other promises!

    Happy new year!

  4. American Teen came out like 2 weeks ago so maybe they will get it eventually? I'm going to buy it for sure, what's weird is that it's a Target Exclusive! I've been noticing releases like that more and more recently, sort of weird!

  5. Since I travel so much, I've started a project to read all of Dickens' books, in order. I've enjoyed savoring all those books I was supposed to read in English class, but really just skimmed.

I'm about a quarter of the way through the Old Curiosity Shop, but it's slow going because my business travel has slowed down for the holidays.

  6. Reading Dickens slowly is a great idea. The original readers of the serialized novel read it over the course of 18 months!

  7. Bet it was hard for people to wait for the next installment!

Katherine and Amateur Reader, I'm impressed with both of you. (Check out Amateur's blog, guys--he may have read more 19th century literature in 2008 than I'll read in my lifetime).

  8. Oh, thanks. I enjoyed your most recent David Copperfield post, and the well-chosen quotes. I haven't read that one yet.
