The Sunday Salon

( Basket o' Cat: Picture by Evan, age 8 )
The Sunday Salon.com With a day off from choir and teaching, and my writing class over, for the first time since August I'm having a relaxing Sunday. Friends are coming over in about an hour, so the boys and I will have to get out of our jammies soon.

I recently finished Bitter Sweets by Roopa Farooki and started writing up my review last night. After that, I'll review Ruth Reichl's second foodie memoir, Comfort Me With Apples. I have a lot of thoughts about that one, some of which I should probably keep to myself.

This morning I started reading My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger, another YA book on my Mock Printz Awards reading list. I'm enjoying it, but it's too soon to tell if it's a great book or just a good one. Hmmm, I was going to say I was on about page 50 but I just checked and I'm on 142. I guess it's going quicker than I gave it credit for!

Kluger does a nice job balancing three first-person narrators, in alternating chapters. Each has his or her own unique style, with the narrative broken up by the occasional email or instant message conversation. I laughed a few times, most memorably at Alejandra, new to Boston: "trying to figure out what these people saw in the Boston Red Sox. I discovered no rational clue. It may be viral."

Well, our friends should be here any minute so I'd better put the kettle on and see if my kids plan on eating lunch anytime soon. How's your Sunday going?

  2. Ooooh, Ruth Reichl's second memoir was my least favorite of hers - I want to know your thoughts!
